The Kissinger Sommer 2021 was planned as a grand, colourful festival with 52 thematically diverse concerts, side views on young artists and unusual repertoires. That is how we usually operate. Unfortunately, the corona pandemic has prevented that due to the limitation of a maximum of 200 people in closed rooms by the State of Bavaria. The city of Bad Kissingen is allowing us now to plan ahead for 2021 within budgetary boundaries. That means a scaling down of the festival due to significantly lower ticket revenue and the cancellation of some of our dream projects. However, a smaller festival is better than no festival at all, Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva wrote “It is time to remove the amber” in a poem that was put to music by Wolfgang Rihm.
Still, there are good news. Our new festival retains its` high quality, albeit at a smaller scale, with 22 concerts. This way you can experience many typical formats of the Kissinger Sommer in the time between June 20th and July 18th (with some gaps in-between): Our festival orchestra Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen performs under direction of Paavo Järvi, Igor Levit is visiting Bad Kissingen for multiple projects and in the first year after Brexit we host two English orchestras, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
We remain hopeful that the restrictions might be loosened at the beginning of next year. In that case we would expand the project and fill the gaps between the concerts with projects and the artist that are still missing.
Please look forward to the Kissinger Sommer in the future!
Dr. Tilman Schlömp
