Georg Philipp Telemann: “Thunder Ode”, TVWV 6:3

Thunder is the symbol for the merciless and uncontrollable forces of nature. The composition of Telemann’s “Thunder Ode” (1756/1760) is strongly connected to the devastating earthquake of Lissabon in 1755 that shook the world of culture. The characteristic structure of the vocal performance as well as the use of three trumpets, scarcely used kettledrums and instrumental ensemble already made this avant-garde work famous and popular back in the composer’s time.
