Joseph Haydn: Missa in tempore belli (“Mess In Time Of War” / “Paukenmesse”) for solo, choir and orchestra C major, Hob. XXII: 9
Charles-Marie Widor: Allegro from symphony No. 6 G minor op. 42/2
In the end the French Revolution fulfilled Rousseau’s dream of people coexisting peacefully at least in part. At first, however, it engulfed Europe in war. In 1796, when Napoléon Bonaparte’s troops threatened Vienna, Joseph Haydn formulated an urgent plea for peace in the Agnus Dei of his “Paukenmesse”, a “Dona nobis pacem” that developed from a French army drumroll.
